Chapter 14

Blood is Power

Dareth listened to Carmaestre breathing beside him.

It was enjoyable, but it didn’t live up to all those times he imagined it. He always thought that, after his first time, he would feel different – more like a man, perhaps – and he was a little disappointed.

Her sheets were soft, so different from the coarse linen that he was used to sleeping in. Just who was this woman? Dareth had heard that some Gavendarians were rich nobles who hoarded money. Possessed more of it than they would ever need. More than someone from Sharma could even comprehend. Was she one of them?

He looked at her, but she was facing away from him and all he could see was her black hair strewn across the pillow. He wondered what he should do. He considered leaving the bed and her tent, but he didn’t know if he was allowed. He had been escorted there by guards, would they come back to collect him as well?

He didn’t like the thought of being pulled from the bed and dragged outside naked when Shayam’s henchmen came back for him, so he decided to dress in case that moment came. He climbed out of the bed carefully, so as to not wake her. The two of them had just pleasured each other but, now the moment was over, he doubted he and this oddball of a woman would have much to chit-chat about.

Shayam appeared at the entrance to the bedchamber, and Dareth turned away guiltily when the Gavendarian man’s eyes wandered from Dareth’s half-dressed body to the figure of Carmaestre lying on the bed.

“Hope I haven’t disturbed anything…” Shayam commented. His mouth curved into a knowing smile.

“For the love of Gods!” Carmaestre moaned from beneath the sheets as she turned over. “Can’t you let a woman rest?”

“Resting seems to be the last thing you’ve been doing…” Shayam snorted.

“What do you want, Shayam?” Carmaestre grumbled, lifting her head to scowl at the man who intruded upon her.

“Actually, it is not you I came here for…” Shayam said and looked at Dareth.

“Well take him away and leave me in peace!” Carmaestre replied, dismissing Dareth with a flick of her wrist.

Dareth put his tunic back on and followed Shayam out of the tent.

Shayam led him through the encampment and, to Dareth’s surprise, there was no escort this time, which he guessed meant the Gavendarian was beginning to trust him. It was strange to think that not much more than a day ago Dareth had been dragged here bound and blindfolded.

“Can I see Aylen?” Dareth asked.

Shayam shook his head. “Not yet I’m afraid, young man. This is a very delicate situation… we are yet to decide how we are going to deal with your friends.”

“They are not my friends,” Dareth shook his head. “I just want you free one of them. Aylen.”

“I will think about it,” Shayam replied. “We are not monsters. We will be fair.”

Dareth wanted to argue further, but he knew it was useless. For now, he must wait.
